An illustration of the fin de siècle taste for legends, Le Roi d’Ys is Lalo's only completed opera. After about one hundred performances in the year of its premiere, it remained a mainstay of the Opéra Comique repertoire until 1940. This is the reason why a bust of Lalo is showcased in the theater's foyer. This “legend of the Breton wars” harmonizes perfectly a love drama and a collective epic, Wagnerian influence and folkloric inspiration, melodic fullness and orchestral opulence.
