Exiled in Tauris, the priestess Iphigenia must submit to King Thoas, who, terrified by a dream, forces her to sacrifice any foreigner who arrives on shore. However, two Greek warriors are shipwrecked, and an odd feeling overwhelms her at the sight of one of them…

In 1774, the year of Louis XVI’s coronation, Gluck settled in Paris, much to the delight of his former pupil, Marie-Antoinette. The Académie Royale de Musique was eager to embrace his reformist approach to the lyrical genre. His French works were met with enormous success, culminating in the triumph of Iphigénie en Tauride, his final masterpiece.

After Gluck and Lully’s Armide and Cherubini’s Médée, Louis Langrée continues the programming of major lyrical tragedies at the Opéra-Comique.

At the helm of one of his favourite scores, he shares the baton with the talented Théotime Langlois de Swarte and brings together Tamara Bounazou, Theo Hoffman, Philippe Talbot, Jean-Fernand Setti, and the choir Les Éléments. Wajdi Mouawad directs this poignant drama of uprooting and exile.
