Two of the great figures of the Années Folles (Roaring Twenties), Sacha Guitry and Reynaldo Hahn, contributed to transform operetta into musical comedy through an increasing interaction with cinema. Their second collaboration, following joyful and scholarly Mozart in 1925, was the delightful sentimental comedy Ô mon bel inconnu. Between the delectable poetry of French comical tradition and the cheerfully off-beat aesthetics of those years transfigured by surrealism, this work explores the masquerades played by the members of a family, disturbed by the outburst of love in the routine of their lives. “It is a bourgeois tragedy,” confessed Guitry. “This tragedy could have been called Know thyself, it could have ended in a disaster. While writing it in alexandrines and before giving it to the Comédie-Française, I thought it over for some ten minutes… and I made it a comedy.” A comedy both light and profound, transfigured by the bittersweet flavor of Reynaldo Hahn’s music.
