Christoph Willibald Gluck

Before putting drama back at the heart of opera, Gluck contributed to the transformation of the choreographic art of his time. With ballet master Angiolini, he embraced the bold project of Calzabigi who, in Vienna, aspired to make dance a comprehensive narrative language.

Don Juan defies social norms as he flouts divine principles. Semiramis, Queen of Babylon, chooses a spouse unaware that he is her son. A ghost announcing the ultimate punishment appears before each of them.

Before putting drama back at the heart of opera, Gluck contributed to the transformation of the choreographic art of his time. With ballet master Angiolini, he embraced the bold project of Calzabigi who, in Vienna, aspired to make dance a comprehensive narrative language.

Owing much to French literature, these two pantomime ballets established Gluck’s evocative art in Europe.

Under the baton of Jordi Savall and with choreographies by Edward Clug and Ángel Rodríguezof, this co-production by the Capitole de Toulouse, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona, and the Opéra-Comique revives the advent of an artistic revolution: above all conventions, primacy is granted to expressive gestures at last.
