Les Percussions de Strasbourg

Resume

A contemporary opéra bouffe
The Percussions de Strasbourg celebrate their 50th anniversary with an opera buffa. The genre revives the provocative spirit of the Italians who shook up French traditions in the middle of the 18th century. It makes it possible to reflect upon popular art and the importance of humor in present-day opera. Situated between Heaven and Hell, Limbo as sung by Dante was wiped off the Catholic cartography in 2007. The plot begins just before this event. In that place of doubt and questioning, the botanist Carolus Linnaeus and the clergyman Giordano Bruno welcome a billionaire intent on organizing a grand banquet when news of the abolition of Limbo arrive at the gates of Hell. Musicians, singers and actors are engaged in the same process of interpretation and questioning. Could Limbo be the homeland of all fruitful dialogue between opposites such as pure an impure, sacred and profane? If it disappears, what will replace it?

Performance duration 1h40 with no interval
