Valérie Lesort and Christian Hecq have created a metamorphosis set, full of fantasy and poetry, thus magnifying Auber’s art and putting it back at the heart of the nineteenth century’s French musical life.

Right before becoming an abbess, the niece of the Queen of Spain leaves the convent unnoticed to enjoy the Christmas ball one last time.

As she returns from the party, she finds a closed door. Over the course of one wild night, she’ll need to change her identity and plans several times… and finally she’ll question her religious calling.

Ninth most played title at the Opéra-Comique, Le Domino noir is an iconic piece of the opera house’s romantic repertoire. Moreover, Berlioz considered it as Auber’s best work, «light, bright and cheerful, often full of sharp edges and charming intentions». O n stage, crossdressing and quiproquos take turns while the score combines playful ensembles with virtuoso arias.

For this 2018 success, Valérie Lesort and Christian Hecq have created a metamorphosis set, full of fantasy and poetry, thus magnifying Auber’s art and putting it back at the heart of the nineteenth century’s French musical life.
