At a ball, Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight. But they live in a tight patriarchal society, where any personal aspiration to happiness is crushed.
From Benda to Dusapin through Bellini, Berlioz… Romeo and Juliet, among all Shakespeare’s characters, are the most inspiring for musiciens. During the romantic era, the two lovers of Verona, brought novelty and intensity to the theatre scene.
Gounod composed the opera while Victor Hugo and his son revived Shakespeare. Created between Verdi’s French Macbeth and Ambroise Thomas’ Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet triumphed during the 1867 Universal Exhibition. The opera’s theatrical movement, songs, intense duos and orchestral colours made it a popular success. Gounod’ sole success. Romeo and Juliet is no longer programmed in Paris. Are we afraid of pure emotion?
Éric Ruf sets Gounod in the decor which was conceived for Shakespeare at the Comédie Française. - a real dramaturgic and environmental challenge. At the head of the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen, Accentus and a dream cast, led Julie Fuchs et Jean-François Borras, Laurent Campellone resuscitates this masterpiece.
The decor was initially created in the workshops of the Comédie-Française for the show Romeo et Juliette by William Shakespeare, directed by Éric Ruf.
