Thanks to the Palazzetto Bru Zane and the Opéra Comique (re)discover Phryné, the most widely performed by Camille Saint-Saëns, in a concert version conducted by Hervé Niquet. Created in 1893, it drew inspiration from the seductive approaches of the Atheian courtesan Phryné.

Saint-Saëns’ only humorous opera, Phryné was the composer’s most widely performed and appreciated opera until the First World War.

The score, completed in March 1893 in Algiers was originally intended for the Théâtre Lyrique de la Renaissance, but the director’s bankruptcy led the composer to turn to the Opéra Comique, where the work was created on 24th March 1893.Two composers expressed their admiration to the author about this little gem: André Messager (“God, your first act is absolutely exquisite”) and Charles Gounod (“Thank you for your delightful Phryné. After having revelled in music listening, I shall hear through musical eyes”). The immediate success of the project quickly spread to the provinces. The editor Durand, covered the cost of translations to solicit international theatres; French and Italian vocal-piano tunes were created in June 1896, foregoing a German version.

In August 1909, André Messager composed recitatives which skilfully interlocked with Saint-Saëns’ music.
It is this extremely rare version that the Palazzetto Bru Zane and the Opéra Comique invite you to (re)discover in the Salle Favart.

Two-act comic opera, on a libretto by Lucien Augé de Lassus, created on 24th May 1893 at the Opéra Comique. 1909 version with recitatives by André Messager.
