Comique Strip' de Jean-Sébastien Bou

Fleeing a shrewish wife and a thousand other perils, a humble cobbler, Marouf, is saved by his nerve and the love of a sultan’s daughter. Picturesque characters, crowd scenes, magical apparitions and coups de théâtre follow one another at the gates of the desert.

When France still enjoyed its colonial power status, the public acclaimed Marouf, savetier du Caire, a delightful musical depiction of an Orient of sultans and genies composed by Ravel’s contemporary, whose “healthy good humor” appealed to Fauré. The Opéra Comique experienced its greatest success of the interwar period with these picaresque adventures drawn on The Arabian Nights and disseminated worldwide.

Jérôme Deschamps revives his 2013 highly inventive staging and Jean-Sébastien Bou his virtuosic interpretation of the title role. Marc Minkowski returns to the Opéra Comique with this forgotten pillar of the repertoire.

Resumption of the 2013 production.
