L’Opéra Comique at the time of the RTLN (1939-1971)

Since 2008 the symposia of the Opéra Comique have surveyed opera from various perspectives by associating several research partners. The Opéra Comique is at the center of these transdisciplinary and international working sessions. From 2018 onward, there will be two lines of research: one on the operatic company, disbanded in 1971, the other on the institution’s operatic economy, which has combined its own resources and public funding since 1762.

Meetings, accounts and the discovery of archives about the last generations of actors who created and defended the French repertoire at Salle Favart. The period spanned is that of the Réunion des Théâtres Lyriques Nationaux (Reunion of national opera houses), which saw the merging of the Opéra Comique and the Opéra de Paris, from the eve of the Second World War until the dismissal of both companies. This day of exchanges will be followed by an evening conducted by Benoît Duteurtre and Jean-Philippe Lafont.

The artists of the Opéra Comique company were among the first performers to be hired by the emerging film industry, from silent movies inspired by standards of the repertoire to musical films that took advantage of the Opéra Comique successes. Today the Opéra Comique offers you to explore, together with Benoît Duteurtre, opera in cinema. The programing enables you to revive the emotions of a screening in a historic theater and discover forgotten or recently restored masterpieces.
