Mediation at the Opéra-Comique: building bridges between audiences and the stage

At the Opéra-Comique, cultural mediation takes many forms, at the crossroads of creation, education and social ties. It enables all audiences to discover opera, whether they are schoolchildren, young spectators or people who do not usually attend performances.

These actions are part of an outreach initiative promoted by the institution through projects aimed at teachers and extracurricular groups, social programmes, and a set of solidarity and eco-responsible commitments: accessibility, inclusion, transmission and sustainable development.

Music as a connection

This week, three artists from the Opéra-Comique Academy: Paul-Louis Barlet (baritone), Thaïs Raï-Westphal (soprano) and Flore-Elise Capelier (vocal coach and pianist) visited the Les Balkans day centre, which supports people over the age of 60, some of whom suffer from neurodegenerative diseases.

The event, which featured a comic opera recital, brought together around fifteen participants for a moment of musical sharing and exchange. Here, music becomes a means of expression and a link between generations, a concrete illustration of the Opéra-Comique's desire to reach out to all audiences.

Transmitting and creating together

The season also opens with a project led by third-year scenography students from the École Bleue. Throughout the year, they will meet with the theatre's artistic and technical teams to design nine set models based on Lucia di Lammermoor. These creations will be exhibited at the theatre in the spring, during the show's run between April and May.

The project begins today with a tour of the theatre and a meeting on stage with the assistant technical director, the first in a series of exchanges designed to share knowledge and discover the theatre profession.

Art as a space for dialogue

On 16 October, another mediation workshop brought together six teenagers from the GHU Paris Sainte-Anne medical and psychological centre.

Artists from the Académie de l'Opéra-Comique, Déborah Salazar (soprano) and Ayano Kamei (vocal coach and pianist), led a two-hour session as part of the centre's weekly music workshop. After a presentation of the show Iphigénie en Tauride and listening to an aria from the opera, the participants learned and sang an excerpt from the chorus together.

They then wrote alexandrines on the theme of lyric tragedy, which they recited to music.

This workshop marks the beginning of a journey of discovery throughout the season: the young people will have the opportunity to participate in other meetings, visits and performances with the Opéra-Comique.

The Opéra-Comique commits itself

Through these initiatives, the Opéra-Comique reaffirms its vocation as an open house, where music is shared as much as it is listened to. By forging links between artists, younger generations and audiences from the social sphere, the theatre pursues a single ambition: to make opera a space for encounter, emotion and dialogue at the heart of today's society.
