As was often the custom, this new adaptation of Goethe’s tragedy was presented in Paris in 1859 in the accessible form of a comic opera. Faust consequently became a cornerstone of the repertoire and then a pilar of popular culture as it as the first French opera to be broadcast in its entirety and then engraved on LP.
Opera in five Acts. Libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré. Created on 19th March 1859 at the Théâtre Lyrique. New production created at the Opéra de Lille on 5 May 2025, revived at the Opéra-Comique from 21 June to 1 July 2025.
