To mark the 150th anniversary of Carmen, don't miss the documentary Carmen, birth of a myth’, directed by Jean Rousselot, broadcast this Sunday 8 June at 6pm on Arte!

In 1875, the premiere of Carmen at the Opéra-Comique shocked the bourgeois public. Too free, too daring, Bizet's work was roundly rejected. Three months later, the composer died, unaware that his opera would become one of the most performed in the world.

From the genesis of this masterpiece to its modern reinterpretations, this documentary plunges us into a fascinating artistic and human adventure, combining archive footage, testimonies from musicians, singers and researchers, and a vibrant reflection on the figure of Carmen, who has become a feminist and universal icon.

With contributions from Louis Langrée, Elina Garanca, Roberto Alagna and sociologist Margot Giacinti.
