After studying philosophy at La Sapienza University in Rome, Fabiana Piccioli began her career as a dancer in Europe before studying production management at the Romaeuropa Festival. In 2005, she joined the Akram Khan Company as technical director and trained as a lighting designer. Working independently since 2014, she has designed lighting for productions at major international venues, including the Royal Ballet and Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Scottish Opera, the Opéra national du Rhin, and the New York City Ballet. She collaborates with leading choreographers and directors, including Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Damien Jalet, Katie Mitchell, Romeo Castellucci, and Oliver Mears. She has received three Knight of Illumination Awards—two for dance and one for opera—as well as a Danza & Danza Award. During the 2025–2026 season, she will design the lighting for Tosca at the Royal Ballet and Opera and for Semele at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
