This season Evan Hughes makes several company debuts: first at the Opéra-Comique in Matthias Pintscher’s Nuit Sans Aube, followed by Montpellier with Leporello in Don Giovanni and finally at Venice’s famed Teatro La Fenice as the Mostro in Salvatore Sciarrino’s Venere e Adone.  In concert, Mr. Hughes will perform Rachmaninov’s Spring Cantata with the Kansas City Symphony and Matthias Pintscher.

Last season Mr. Hughes made his debut as Idreno in Haydn’s Armida with the Kammer Akademie Potsdam.  He sang the bass solo in Mozart and Ullmann’s Kaiser Requiem with the Orchestre de Paris and Omer Meir Wellber and the world premiere of Nante’s Anahata at the Elbphilharmonie with Kent Nagano.  With AMOC in New York City, he performed in Lewis/Monteverdi’s The Comet/Poppea and Matthew Aucoin’s Music for New Bodies.

Prior to that Evan Hughes made his debut with the Theater an der Wien as Valens in a new Stefan Herheim production of Handel’s Theodora conducted by Bejun Mehta.  He then returned to the Opernhaus Zürich for Jupiter in a new Jetske Mijnssen production of Rameau’s Platée conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm.  Mr. Hughes also returned to the Boston Lyric Opera for Ophémon in Joseph Bologne’s Anonymous Lover. In concert Mr. Hughes reprised his acclaimed portrayal of the Protector in George Benjamin’s Written on Skin with the Orchestre National de Lille and Alexander Bloch.

Mr. Hughes opened the previous season with a debut at the Opéra de Lille as Somnus in the Barry Kosky production of Semele, conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm.  He then appeared as the title-role in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Volksoper in Vienna before touring as the King in Lessons in Love and Violence in concerts throughout Germany and Belgium conducted by the composer, George Benjamin. He then returned to the Hamburgische Staatsoper for the Monster in the world premiere of Sciarrino’s Venere e Adone.  Finally, Mr. Hughes performed and recorded a selection of Elliott Carter works (which he premiered) at the Aldeburgh Festival.

Evan Hughes began the prior season with a concert of Handel’s Rodelinda in Moscow in which he debuted the role of Garibaldo.  He then returned to the Opernhaus Zürich for one of his signature-roles, Leporello in Don Giovanni.  He created the role of Virgil in the world premiere of Dusapin’s Il Viaggio, Dante at the Aix-en-Provence Festival.

Prior to that, Mr. Hughes returned to the Komische Oper Berlin’s Ensemble and appeared with the Teatro Massimo in Palermo as the bass soloist in Beethoven’s Mass in C and as Masetto in Don Giovanni.

Previously Evan Hughes returned to the Komische Oper Berlin in roles such as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte and Somnus in Semele.  He also made his debut with the Opernhaus Zürich as Gobrias in a new production of Handel’s Belshazzar.  In concert, Evan Hughes appeared with the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra and Kent Nagano at the Elbphilharmonie in Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and with the BBC Philharmonic and Omer Meir Wellber in Manchester in Beethoven’s Mass in C.
