A true rising star, baritone Huw Montague Rendall has distinguished himself as one of the most exciting singers of his generation. His recent debut as Pelleas Pelleas and Melisande prompted Le Figaro to say: “We are blown away by the Pelléas of Huw Montague Rendall. Son of mezzo Diana Montague and tenor David Rendall, the English baritone has the physique, the voice and the French to be "the" Pelléas of his generation”. The British baritone has already appeared on some of the world’s most important stages, including the Salzburg Festival, Zurich Opera, Festival d’Aix-en- Provence, Komische Oper Berlin and Glyndebourne Festival. Still only in his twenties, his feature engagements include leading roles at Royal Opera House, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera National de Paris, Dutch National Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona and Bayerische Staatsoper.

Montague Rendall continues his remarkable ascent during the 2021/22 with a series of antici-pated projects: Papageno Die Zauberflöte for his company debuts with The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Lyric Opera of Chicago; the title role in Le lacrime di Eros, a world premiere of a baroque pastiche imagined by conductor Raphaël Pichon and director Romeo Castelucci at the Dutch National Opera; as well as a return to Glyndebourne Festival. On the concert platform he joins forces once more with Raphaël Pichon and Ensemble Pygmalion to sing Christus in an Eu-ropean tour of the Bach Trilogy: The Life of Christ comprising of three oratorios: The Christmas Oratorio, St John’s Passions and The Easter Oratorio; as well as appearing in a solo recital with pianist Simon Lepper in at the Opera House in Lille, France.

Recent highlights include Guglielmo Così fan tutte at the Glyndebourne Festival; the title role in Pelléas et Mélisande at Opéra de Rouen Normandie; Papageno Die Zauberflöte with Glynde-bourne on Tour; Conte Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro at Opéra National de Lorraine; Harlequin Ariadne auf Naxos at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and Théâtre des Champs-Élysées; Schaunard La bohème at Opernhaus Zürich; Marcello in Barrie Kosky’s new production of La bohème at Komische Oper, and Prince of Mantua Fantasio at Garsington Opera.

On the concert platform he sang Brahms’ Ein Deutches Requiem together with the Dutch National Opera at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; Ned Keene Peter Grimes at the Enescu Festival; a “Mozart Matinee” series with Raphaël Pichon at the Salzburg Festival; Richard Blackford’s Pietà at the Cadogan Hall with the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus & Orchestra; Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurgisnacht with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra; Duruflé’s Requiem with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra and many concerts in the UK ranging from solo song recitals to sacred works by Brahms, Handel, Stainer, Fauré, Finzi and Vaughan Williams. A dedicated recitalist his most recent appareances include a liederabend with Hélio Vida in Nancy and Die Schöne Müllerin with pianist Gary Matthewman for Lancaster Arts.

An alumnus of the Royal College of Music, Montague Rendall trained under the tutorage of Russell Smythe, having previously studied under David Rendall and Philip Doghan. In summer 2016 Montague Rendall was as a Jerwood Young Artist with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, where he sang the role of Fiorello Il barbiere di Siviglia, for which he was also awarded the much-coveted John Christie Award 2016. The following summer he joined the prestigious Young Artist Programme at the Salzburg Festspiele where he made his debut in the role of Second Apprentice Wozzeck.

During his two seasons in the International Opera Studio in Zürich, his roles included Nardo La finta giardiniera, Papageno (cover) Die Zauberflöte, Nazarener Salome, Ramiro L’Heure Es-pagnole, Deputato Don Carlo, and Foreman 3 Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District, and Yamadori in a new production of Madama Butterfly.
