Resume
In 1900 Gustave Charpentier caused a sensation at the Opéra Comique with the premiere of Louise. For the first time, the Paris working-class neighborhood of Montmartre, its pungent language, its woes and tragedies were shown beneath the gilding of the Salle Favart. From what he had designed as a “musical novel,” Abel Gance made a splendid epic in praise of the City of Light. A wonderful musical, cinematic and historical testimony.
