Drama, opera and otherness

Drama, opera and otherness

SYMPOSIUM

Resume

From the 1789 Revolution to World War II, the foreigner's status changed in France with the elaboration of the nation-state, the development of trade and colonization. The stage embraced the theme of otherness, not so much to reflect a reality but for its spectacular potential. Revealing the way a community perceives itself, representation of otherness is also a source of renewal. This symposium will be held from the 23rd through the 25th of May 2013 at Université Paris 8, the Opéra Comique, the BnF, the Institut national d’Histoire de l’art, the Cité nationale de l’histoire de l’immigration (partner institutions of the project)
