Massenet 2012 – Centenary of the composer's death
Massenet, whose bust is displayed at the top of the grand staircase, died in 1912. At the foot of the staircase, his Manon has welcomed the public of the Opéra Comique since the inauguration of the third Salle Favart in 1898. Massenet, then aged 56, had been instrumental in the modernization of the genre. He had offered his theater of choice numerous masterpieces and popularized the spirit of opéra comique worldwide. The institution pays him homage.
Massenet and the Opéra Comique Eight premieres at the Opéra Comique, a long-lasting collaboration with the artists of the company, an art form drawn on the very sources of opéra comique: this day will be devoted to a close examination of the long-term association of a great composer with an institution torn between the weight of tradition and demand for modernity.
