In 2016 the Opéra Comique and the Musée d'Orsay organize a joint programming on the theme of the "Spectaculaire Second Empire" exhibition in an endeavor to show their common roots. Inaugurated a few months apart in late 19th century, the Salle Favart and the Gare d'Orsay displayed the same combination of technical modernity and decorative refinement. Both were listed as historical monuments in the 1970s. The respective heritages of both buildings highlight the treasures of French Romantic century with its various artistic currents, its tensions between official art and modernity and unprecedented synergies between art forms.
Invited to present an event in the auditorium, the Opéra Comique and the Musée d'Orsay have devised an eclectic program that does justice to the theatrical wealth fostered by Napoleon III's regime.
This event revolves around the Second Empire's favorite composer and leader Jacques Offenbach, especially as the rediscovery of his forgotten masterpiece Fantasio is scheduled for the opening of the 2017 Season at the Opéra Comique.
