Since 2008 the symposia of the Opéra Comique have been surveying opera from various angles, associating many research partners in transdisciplinary and international sessions of work and exchange. There have been two lines of research : one on the company and staff of our house, the other on operatic economy. Besides, each June a symposium is organized in honor of a composer. After Saint-Saëns in 2017 and Gounod in 2018, this is Offenbach’s turn.
There’s never been a particular profile to direct an opera house. To be at the head of an institution is not necessarily a calling but rather the feeling of a need to make productions evolve or an opportunity in a multi-faceted career. The businessman, the performer, the musician or the stage director are led to come to terms with the public and the artists and, above all, with the economy of this costly – and political – art form. The 2019 features Favart, Adam, Offenbach, Carré as well as Lully and Durazzo. Let us look into the remarkable destinies that shaped the history of European opera.
