The Opéra Comique is touring in January

The productions of the Opéra Comique performed in 2017 are on tour through France this January. If you missed one of the operas below at Salle Favart, it’s not too late!

  • Alcione in Caen on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 January 2018

Tragédie lyrique in five acts. Libretto by Antoine Houdar de la Motte. Premiered at the Académie Royale de Musique in 1706.

Alcione, the daughter of Aeolus, king of the winds, seems to be very happy. She is to marry Ceix, king of Trachis, who loves her. But three are against their happiness: Peleus – Ceix’s best friend, who’s in love with Alcione – the wizard of Phorbas, who feels deprived of his right to the throne once occupied by his ancestors – and the magician Ismena. They all decide to hinder the wedding of the two lovers.

  • Le Comte Ory in Versailles on Friday 12 and Sunday 14 January 2018

Opera in two acts. Libretto by Eugène Scribe. Premiered at the Opéra de Paris in 1828

At the time of the Crusades, lords departed for the Holy Land, leaving the women defenseless. The sister of the lord of Formoutiers languished in her castle, wooed by a depraved count and a page in love with her. Both strive to approach the beautiful recluse, Ory by disguising himself and Isolier by unveiling his soul. Which of the two will take the lead?

  • Fantasio in Rouen from 26 through 30 January 2018

Opéra comique in three acts. Libretto by Paul de Musset. Premiered at the Opéra Comique in 1872

The student Fantasio dreams of changing his life. The court jester has just died. What if he took his place? But no one loved the dead jester like princess Elsbeth, betrothed by her father to the prince of Mantua in a political union. The young jester will convince the princess to obey her heart. How far will she let herself be seduced?

During 50 minutes of music and animated images, young participants and accompanying adults will travel through 300 years of theatrical life of the Opéra Comique, its company, anecdotes, tragedies and hits. They will be invited to sing along during the performance just as in the 18th century.
