With over 3000 creations over 300 years of history, the Opéra Comique has never ceased to reinvent itself. In September 2019 two commissions will premiere.
Macbeth Underworld, a creation jointly commissioned to Pascal Dusapin by the Théâtre de la Monnaie and the Opéra Comique will have its world premiere on 20 September 2019 in Brussels and be performed for the first time at Salle Favart on 25 March 2020. The staging is entrusted to Thomas Jolly. Pascal Dusapin composed his new opus to a text by Frédéric Boyer. “It’s not about telling one more story but about making more stories with opera. Opera is about saying by singing together what preoccupies us,” said Dusapin.
Simultaneously, on September 27thL’Inondation by Francesco Filideiand Joël Pommeratwill premiere in Paris. At the invitation of the Opéra Comique, Joël Pommerat accepted to confront for the first time the writing of an original libretto and collaborated with Francesco Filidei. In a new process of experimentation and research, the author/director and the composer have worked together since the autumn of 2016 for this operatic creation based on a short story of the same name by Yevgeny Zamyatin (published in the USSR in 1929), resulting in an opera in two acts.
For three centuries, the Opéra Comique has lived to the rhythm of creations stimulated by the junction of dramatic texts and musical exactness. It remains faithful to its duty to foster the creation of repertoire.
