Getting free of hang-ups, departitioning, opening up new horizon: the power of the performing arts has already been celebrated. With the addition of the power of voice, its federative potency, all the human aspects it makes us share. Going forward and building together, setting ourselves a common goal. Learning exactingness and rigor to serve a collective project. These are the reasons that prompted the Opéra Comique to participate in the setting-up of the first multidisciplinary maîtrise (choir) dedicated to operatic arts: the Maîtrise populaire de l’Opéra Comique.

Born out of the transformation and extension of the means of action of the Compagnie Sans Père founded by Sarah Koné in 2008, the Maîtrise populaire de l’Opéra Comique is a social and artistic project supported by the Ville de Paris, the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the DRAC and the Ministry of Education and Research. The Pré-Maîtrise and the Maîtrise populaire offer young people from 8 to 25 years of age, who are not yet musicians, a thorough training in choral and solo singing, drama, modern dance and tap dance.

The Opéra Comique offers the young artists of the Maîtrise populaire special access to the Salle Favart in order for them to become initiated into all the characteristics of the performing arts. These young artists form the third circle of the Nouvelle Troupe Favart with which exchanges are fostered by a sponsorship system and intergenerational transmission.

So the objective is twofold: offer new access to culture and help future generations to enjoy multidisciplinary learning based on exactingness. For these budding singers, the range of possibilities is wide open.

The Maîtrise Populaire de l’Opéra Comique presents its year-end production, Annie, a musical by Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin first performed on Broadway in 1977.

Annie is a girl who lives in New York City at the orphanage of Miss Hannigan, an alcoholic woman who’s hard on her. Roaming the streets while running away, Annie finds and adopts a dog she calls Sandy. But she’s quickly found and forcibly returned to the orphanage.

All the while, the wealthiest man in New York, a billionaire named Oliver Daddy Warbucks, decides to redeem himself a conscience by inviting an orphan during Christmastime. By happy chance, Annie is the chosen orphan. From there will follow a series of adventures to try to find her parents.
